I think I’m in love…

I feel like a traitor. I was born in San Francisco, and have traveled all over the world, and it had remained my favorite big city. Until today. We started off the day at church, which was good. Having a little tussle with my 3 year old about going to class. This, too, shall pass. I put my foot down this week and told him that he did not have to go to his own class, but I was going…

Chicago!

Welcome to the Windy City! It was living up to its name today. Another inclement weather day, but I was a little more prepared this time.  We spent the majority of the day at the museum of science and industry. No shortage of things to see and do here. The patterns in nature and mirror maze exhibits were a bit hit. The boys loved the model train running through the Chicago downtown. My favorite exhibit was the YOU! The experience…

Uncooperative weather

Today we drove to Indiana and through to Illinois. High fives for new states! Not 5 minutes before pulling in to our destination  the skies darkened. We checked the weather-no problem. No rain on the way. That green/gray/black cloud doesn’t mean anything. TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR!  That’s fine. Deon needs to work, it’s time to make lunch, and the visitors center is very child-friendly. We spent a few hours here, learning, eating, wasting time (and Deon working).  And, amazingly, the skies cleared!…

Henry Ford times past ?>

Henry Ford times past

In addition to the amazing museum that Henry Ford created, he also made a living history museum called Greenfield Village. It’s like so many we have been to, with old buildings moved onto the site. This one is so much better though, because they use your (rather expensive) admission fees to pay employees to stand in *every* house and dispense information. Also, actors are hired to perform throughout the day.  Deon and the 3 oldest first toured the factory. They…

Motor city

We decided to spend our time in Detroit at the Henry ford complex. There is so much more we could have done, but this seemed the quintessential Motor City thing to do. Today we did the HF Museum. There is so much more to this museum than cars! First up, we saw the actual car that Regan was shot in and JFK was assassinated in. And they kept using the cars, which I thought was weird. There is so much…

Round two

Whose good idea was it to have kids with birthdays one after another. This is exhausting! Today’s birthday, brought to you by Jedikiah, begins with cinnamon rolls. Then a short drive to a science museum, Impression 5, more a science themed children’s museum. Perfect for my new minted 3 year old!              Big sisters are awesome! Then on to Detroit, and a failed attempt for Aunica to attend a youth activity.  All Jedi wanted to eat for dinner…

Birthday season in full swing

4 out of my 6 kids are summer babies, and it’s birthday #2 for the season. Dimitri turned 8 today! This is a big birthday for those of our faith, because it is the age you are allowed to get baptized. We have some options, but are holding out to see if a trip back home mid-travels will be in order.  He started the day with crepes. It was so late, we ended up skipping lunch and headed over to…

Still a little off-kilter

So, it’s Sunday, church day. But, apparently, not for us. I was already calculating who would be skipping church with the pukies, but, when we pulled into town at 2am to scope out the church location…no dice. Thanks, google maps. Should have known to cross-reference the church web site. :/ We did get a nice happy-birthday call for Dimitri from bishop Canaan, that was nice.  So, we all slept in instead. Did some laundry, and some driving. We just barely…

Sick

It had to happen. We are struggling with a mild illness going through our family. Sidda was up for a few hours with a bad stomachache last night. Between that and the rain, we didn’t venture out until 4 this afternoon.  And we should have just stayed home. We went to cherry republic in glen arbor. Super yummy, cherry everything. Had Kieran in the ergo, on my chest. He threw up all over me. All down my shirt, all over…

Another Michigan industry ?>

Another Michigan industry

We woke up to a dreary morning. Rainy, overcast. We purchased a pass yesterday that not only got us into the Mackinac Island sites, but also some on the mainland. One was Mill Creek Historic Park. Although it wasn’t in our original itinerary, zip lining was an option, and my kids needed a pick-me-up from sight-seeing.  They enjoyed the saw demonstration, but, of course, the hi light was the “adventure tour.” A ropes bridge, zip line, and 5 story climbing…
