Hello AlCan!

We made it to the Beginning of the Alcan today! Which is *very* funny, because we sure have driven a long way to only be at the beginning!

The Alcan begins in Dawson Creek. It is celebrating its 75th birthday this year. It was a collaborative effort between Canada and the USA to protect the west coast from Japanese invasion in WWII. It was an amazing feat, completed in just 9 months.

Dawson Creek was a bit of a letdown, just because it was too hot to really enjoy the activities I had planned, like walking around the historic district. We did learn some interesting facts from the little museum. We were sternly schooled that the Alcan may have been instrumental in our winning WWII. But she also told me that it was Teddy Roosevelt who ordered it built (and was shocked and reluctant to believe me when I corrected her). Wrong Roosevelt.

So we opted for frozen yogurt instead. Win!And we were on our way! Just a little outside of town we took a detour to follow a stretch of the original Alcan, and see the Kiskatinaw bridge. This is an original bridge from the building of the Alcan, and it cool because it is a wooden bridge that makes a ninety degree turn. And Deon loves bridges. (Check out that shirt!)

I’m feeling a little nervous about how far we are from our destination, so we put some road behind us. We are totally thrown off by how late it stays light. It doesn’t even seem to occur to us to put the kids to bed before 11. And we were rewarded with a beautiful, long-lasting sunset.
