NYC day one

Today I ventured into the city by myself with all 6 kids. And everybody survived. It was a bit of a rough start though. It’s a long walk to the bus stop, and an even longer walk to the ATM and quarters, thanks to that bridge yesterday. We finally get on the bus, then into the subway station. This is when I need to make some decisions about what kind of pass to buy. And this is when my kids…

Now entering NY, pull out your wallets

Today was a nice, easy Sunday. Around here was stake conference, and a huge stake, so far away. We opted to watch some more general conference instead. This campground also had a nice playground, laundry, showers, and a dump station, so we utilized all of that.  We didn’t have a long drive, but we didn’t leave until 3pm. I had scoped out a national park in Brooklyn we could stay at for $30/night, no hookups. We usually put in “avoid…

New Jersey

Well, we are moving right along in our adventure! We will be home in 50 days, which feels soooo soon. Some of our adventures are getting truncated. New Jersey is only getting about a day and a half. Today we spent at Allaire State Park. They have a 19th century iron works village, with most buildings open for viewing, with costumed interpreters ready to answer questions. Strange though, they don’t allow any photography inside the buildings. Deon and Aunica chose…

Philadelphia-the short list

Yay, it’s Friday! Deon has been putting in a lot of hours, so he took today off to spend with us. We were in Philadelphia in 2006, so some of this was a repeat for us.  First of all, public transportation is the best. After a horrid time parking in DC (cheaper for our family, but a waste of many hours), we decided to do public transportation no matter the cost. And it ended up cheap! $30 for an unlimited…

My oldest and I

I was determined to get an early start on my day to spend with my oldest. We got up, showered, and Deon gave us a ride onto the metro, since it was kind of a long walk, and raining. Our first stop was Fords Theater, and it turned out the 3rd time was a charm. We got tickets for 11am, so with 45 minutes to spare, we had a nice breakfast across the street. I had chicken fried steak and…

A little off

Our time here is DC has been good, but always a little off. We have tried twice to see fords theater, but couldn’t get tickets. We have struggled to get moving in the morning, and today I spent some time cleaning after a week of go, go, go. We headed into the city to see the White House, which we had done with the girls but not the boys. Parking was scary, but we survived. We only had a few…

More friends

We put the Salatino’s on the plane this morning, and drowned our sorrows by meeting other friends for a museum day.  I must say I really hate parking in this city. I passed 10 different garages, all either full or too low clearance for our van. I finally gave up and parked at union station, which was 1.2 miles away from where we wanted to be. We met up with the Phillips at the museum of natural history, which we…

Girls day in the city  ?>

Girls day in the city

Today the 5 of us girls metroed in to the city. It’s more expensive to do, but so much more convenient. The walk through Greenbelt National Park was so pretty and relaxing.  On the list for today was the holocaust museum. As expected, it was very sobering.  Aunica and Erika teamed up to give us a fantastic family home evening lesson on hymns, and we called it a night. Tomorrow we put the Salatino’s on a plane bound for Oregon.

Lazy Sunday ?>

Lazy Sunday

No church today, as it is general conference this weekend. We slept in, I made some yummy breakfast, we listened to some conference, and headed into the city. We started out at the national archives and were able to see the constitution, the bill of rights, and the Declaration of Independence. I’m glad we did, because the D of I is getting so faded it is hard to read, and it’s time for viewing is probably coming to a close. …

Our nation’s capitol

Today was a loooong day. All ten of us drove into the city. The big kids and other two adults did a tour of our capitol building and the library of congress, while I stayed outside with the 3 littles. It worked out well, but I was done by the end of 2 hours! I resorted to letting the 2 older boys take pictures with my nice camera and trying to keep Kieran from playing in the gum. Then we…
