Slowing Down

I feel like every time we check into a Thousand Trails campground we slow waaay down. It feels like camping here, and is so relaxing. The main reason we chose to come here and stay for a week was to allow the kids some time with their friends, so that is about all they did today. Of course, I can’t ever remember to get picture of these moments.  We had a campfire though, with smores, so that was fun. Some…

A Walk on Marginal Way, Maine ?>

A Walk on Marginal Way, Maine

Today we are moving a little slower. The kids have good friends to play with, and I feel like we don’t have that much to see. It’s relaxing.  We did take a walk on Marginal Way. It runs between 2 cities along the coast. It was beautiful weather. At the end of our walk we stopped for clam chowder.

A Rough 24 hours in Maine

Rough does not begin to describe my last 24 hours. Demoralizing is the best I can do. Demoralizing: cause (someone) to lose confidence or hope; dispirit. About 2 hours before we got to Wells Sidda brought me a strange looking bug she found on her brush. Almost looked like a tick. I didn’t want to know, but I did. That wretched little thing was a louse. Never in my 40 years on this planet and nearly 14 years as a…

Sunday on the Maine Coast

Today was a regional conference for all of Maine, so we didn’t attend church. It’s been a strange couple of months for church. On the Portland locals page I found a farm hosting a plow day open house, so we went. Except it was too busy for the plows, but there were plenty of other fun things going on. There were pony cart rides, which the boys rode a million times, and a horse drawn wagon ride, and goat clipping…

Living like a Local in Portland, Maine

Back home I was the queen of being connected. I always knew what activities were going on. Today I had done some research and found out what was happening this weekend where we are, Portland, Maine! First off was a free climbing event at a local gym. I took the oldest 4 while Deon stayed with the littles. The kids had a blast with both bouldering and belayed climbing. The staff were impressed with their abilities, but I did have…

Shopping in Freeport, Maine

Today was a bit of an odd duck day for us. We spent the day in Freeport, Maine, which is a super cute little town for shopping. We rarely shop, especially not for anything brand new, but we went into the LL Bean outlet, Old Navy, and Abercrombie and Fitch. Then Deon spend a looong time drooling over camping supplies in the LL Bean flagship store. There was a cool fish aquarium and some moose who were found dead with…

Gorgeous day on the Maine coast

Part of the reason Deon was in a hurry to hit the road last night was we knew that today might be our last sunny day for our stay in Maine and he wanted to make the best of it.  Our first stop was in Prospect at the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory and Fort Knox. The bridge, originally from 1931, was rebuilt in 2003 to include an observation deck on one of the towers. It is a fast elevator ride…

Acadia NP, the end of our journey east

On the docket for today was Acadia National Park. It was breathtakingly beautiful.  First we hiked to Sand Beach. Our next stop was thunder hole. None of us were very impressed with the spouting function. I don’t know if it was because the tide was wrong or because we have seen some other impressive water spouts, but this was pretty puny. Not to be discouraged though, we did enjoy climbing on the rocks (well, some of us) and the powerful…

Discovery Museum of Maine, Bangor

Another rainy day, but I didn’t think I would have much luck with two days in, so I took the kids to the Discovery Museum of Maine.  This is definitely geared for younger children, which is fine because I have a lot of those. Aunica opted to sit in the RV with Deon, who was working, and read. It’s a nice break for her.  Although directed at the younger set, all of my kids had a blast. It was three…

Rainy Monday in Maine  ?>

Rainy Monday in Maine

After 10 months, I am feeling like we are finally hitting our stride. This feels like regular life. This is a little unfortunate, since we are headed home. Today was rainy, and we could use a break, so we just stayed in the RV. I made a list of rainy day activities, and we got around to board games, schoolwork, some educational videos, and naps. We had a lot of other things on the list, but we will save them…
