Amazing Williamsburg

All the feels when we pulled into the rv park last night. This is the campground we stayed at for the fulltime families Halloween hangout. It changed our feelings about what we were doing from an adventure to a lifestyle. We found our tribe.  Even though all those people were scattered now, this place felt a little bit like coming home. The reason we are here is that we missed doing Colonial Williamsburg our first time here. Don’t ask how…

Birthday boy!

Deon likes to point out he was the last to have a birthday on the road, and today was it.  We started the day super early as we had agreed to getting on the 7am ferry since we parked in line. Even before the sun was up! It was a shivery morning! I packed up all the hot cocoa fixings and we headed upstairs to the observation deck. The only bummer was that the ocean was still pretty choppy, making…

Failed day

Well, today was a bit of a failed day. We are STILL struggling with the time change. Today is Sunday. The closest church was 30 minutes away, the only time was 9am, and we had to unhook, dump and fill. I woke up at 9.  Needless to say, we missed church. Which is a very unusual occurrence, so I’m not going to stress about it. Generally I would rush, yelling and pushing to get everyone out the door. But today…

North

We made some tracks today, back into North Carolina. All of a sudden it doesn’t feel like we are in the south anymore. The landscape, weather, and general feel are different. It was mostly a driving day, no touristy activities. We headed for a national forest and were not disappointed by it. The kids had a blast playing in the puddles and washing the van in the rain.  Here is a funny thing about our trip. It’s like one day…

St Patrick’s day ?>

St Patrick’s day

Well, we raced out of Savannah to avoid a crazy St Patrick’s day, and Charleston was much more manageable. We started the day at a small parade just a block from our rv.  Then Deon went to work and I took the kids for a walk down to city hall for the Irish flag raising and anthem. Which I missed bc I had to take kids to potty.  After, we went right next door to a very old, beautiful park….

Southern bucket list

Today I got to check off an item on my southern bucket list (although, like everything else on this trip, it just leads to 5 more things tacked on to it). We visited Boone Hall Plantation. I chose this plantation on the basis of a few criteria. One was cost, and the all-inclusiveness of the price. One, of course, was ratings. But the one that intrigued me most was the focus on African Americans in the history of the plantation….

Driving day

Today was just a driving day. We are very much struggling with this time change, and we got up too late to do much more than drive. We did earn ourselves a new state though- welcome to South Carolina!  Our destination was Charleston, SC. Another beautiful southern city. We spent a lot of time just trying to figure out where to stay. Ended up at Buck Hall national recreation area. Beautiful place, but it’s COLD here! All I have for…

Downtown Savannah

Today we spent 5 long hours walking downtown Savannah. I bought 2 guide books about the historic buildings and we set out.  Savannah was laid out around purposely created “squares” like small parks every few blocks. It makes for a beautiful city. The architecture reminded me a little of New Orleans.  They take St Patrick’s day seriously around here, and are expecting an influx of 500,000 people this weekend. Needless to say, we will not be in that number. The…

Girl Scouts rock!

Today I took the girls out for a special tour of the Juliette Gordon Low birthplace. My lifelong Girl Scouts were so excited! It also happens to be Girl Scout week, in honor of the anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouts. The tour guide really gave an interesting tour and took lots of time with my girls. I had no idea that JGL was such an artist! She painted this painting, as well as many other items in the…

Some days are just off

Today was stressful. Maybe it was because of the time change, who knows. When we pulled into the parking lot at church, we clipped a car. First time in 8 months. Then Deon lost his temper with the kids. Took off for a bit to cool off. Came back and we took some time to reassess our trip.  The kids did play nicely together with legos. The girls have recently taken up new hobbies: Aunica knitting and crocheting, Sidda making…
