Downtown Omaha
What a great day! If you haven’t realized yet, I am an eternal optimist. Every day is great, even the days where I don’t get any sleep or my kid pukes on me or whatever. This wasn’t one of those days, it really was great.
It did start a little weird. We had pulled in to our second choice of campsites, since our first was ful. We did notice some riff-raff, and some of the dirtiest restrooms I have seen. But we keep our own house with us, and it was late. 7:30am we get a bang on the door and the police are clearing everyone out. We can come back in, but we have to hook up and repark. Ok then. The camp host came and told us it didn’t apply to us, but definitely weird.
We spent the rest of the morning with the kids organizing schoolwork and reading. I am feeling very relaxed about this year.
After lunch Deon was done working so we packed up and headed to downtown Omaha. Our first stop was the Durham museum, located in an old train station. It was gorgeous. We got a screaming deal with a veterans discount, $35 for a year pass when one day’s tickets would have cost us $57. With a big family we are finding that year memberships are often cheaper than single day tickets.
Anyway, there were speaking statues, old train cars, and history of Omaha. Very well done and child friendly.
As we were driving up, we noticed some cool statues in a park, so we scrapped the rest of the plans for the evening to check out the downtown area.
There ended up being three downtown we walked around. The first was the pioneer park, leading to the second, spirit of Nebraska park. The first was a series of larger-than-life pioneers in a wagon train headed west. Over the next block were a herd of buffalo startled by the pioneers. This ended at the second park, a flock of geese startled by the buffalo, taking off in flight from a lake. Super well done, and beautiful.
