Wisconsin is known for…
Cheese! We spent a leisurely morning, then headed out. We were on our way to a new state today, but we couldn’t leave Wisconsin without sampling the goods. Cheese! Something like 62% of the cheese in the USA comes from Wisconsin.
We stopped at Arena Cheese Factory in Arena, WI. So many tasty varieties! We purchased a picnic lunch of squeaky cheese, string cheese whips, summer sausage, crackers, and pears from the rv. It was an amazing lunch.
Then we headed for Iowa! Today’s stop was Effigy Mounds National Monument. We started at the visitors center, watching the movie and learning about the mounds. They were built by native peoples, but none of the existing tribes have knowledge of them. They predate history, which I thought was really interesting. They were burial mounds, among other things, shaped like animals (bears and birds here), conical, and linear. Unfortunately, their numbers are much diminished, but there were some excellent mounds left. The hike out was very steep, a good workout. In total it was only 2 1/2 miles.
We stayed at a nice campground and Deon and I snuck out for our first date night since we were home. That was nice!
