Happy Canada Day, eh!

I worked hard in my plans to be in Canada today, to celebrate it’s 150th birthday!

We got a late start, but headed over to Fort Calgary. There were booths with giveaways (check out all those body stickers), a petting zoo, and music. We had a very nice picnic by the river.

I was so proud of Sidda, as there was a Girl Guides booth and she jumped right in. She joined in their service of applying body stickers and told them all about life in the USA and our travels, even educating them about the upcoming change of Harriet Tubman onto the twenty dollar bill.

Then a leisurely walk down the river to Prince Island Park. We arrived just at the tail end of the festivities. There had been a pow wow. Sidda learned to dance and Deon and the kids participated in a tug of war. Deon was on the end and the rope broke, sending him flying. But before that he was having a great time!

Then we wandered over to the Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner. It was a long wait, but there was a building across the street with a large, landscaped open space in front so the kids could run, and then hide out under cover during a torrential (but short) thunderstorm! The kids behaved really well at dinner, and it was fun to reminisce about our days in Sacramento, where we would frequent OSF when we had company in town.

From there we let the kids play at a park to kill time.

Then we made the mistake of trying to move our car. We wanted to see if we could get a good view from across the river at a church building. Unfortunately, the roads were closed to traffic, so Deon ended up dropping us off and missing it altogether. The view was good, but not great. It was SUPER crowded. It was cool to see the space needle on fire though, and the fireworks performance was good.

It was a late show, as the sun sets very late here (just a taste of what is to come). The show was over at 11:45, then a hike back to the car with some very tired puppies, and a loooong drive through narrow, crowded streets, along with most of the population of this 1.3 million persons city. It was well past 1am when we got back to our rv (which we had dropped at Walmart), and nearly 2am by the time Deon had us all hooked back up so we would be ready to pull out in the morning. What a night!

  1. Our Canada day was rather boring. It rained all day so the only thing we ended up doing was getting ice cream. And a little bit of fishing.

      1. Prior to getting to the campground where we were when it was Canada Day, it had rained at least a little every day but one over the course of 2 weeks.
