My oldest and I
I was determined to get an early start on my day to spend with my oldest. We got up, showered, and Deon gave us a ride onto the metro, since it was kind of a long walk, and raining.
Our first stop was Fords Theater, and it turned out the 3rd time was a charm. We got tickets for 11am, so with 45 minutes to spare, we had a nice breakfast across the street. I had chicken fried steak and Aunica had chocolate chip pancakes, and we both had hot cocoa.
Then quickly over for our museum visit and theater performance.
Then we walked over to Newseum (in the pouring rain, with breaks under cover because I felt like a drowned cat).
I had only planned to stay a few hours at newseum, but we closed the place down. I had plans, but Aunica is constantly teaching me. She will not be rushed, and she really has a better handle on living in the moment than I do.
So we slowed down. And she was still sad we ran out of time and couldn’t see the whole museum.
We did see the FBI exhibit (I may have a budding agent on my hands), 2 movies, a section of the Berlin Wall and checkpoint Charlie, a 9/11 exhibit, she read a TON of front pages of many countries and states, including San Luis Obispo, and walked through a rock and journalism exhibit. We also caught the Pulitzer Prize exhibit for just a few minutes on the way out.
She had a million things to talk about. It was great. These teen years are amazing for being interested in politics, humanity, and the world at large. I love the thoughtful woman she is becoming, and am privileged to have had this day to spend with her.
And Deon was a great sport about keeping the other kids and not complaining at all that we were HOURS later than planned, altering his day as well. Good man, picked us up at the metro and we were on our way to Philadelphia!
