Museum of American history and girls night

Today we struck out at Fords theater (we are learning about reservations 6 months in advance), but were able to visit a super cool museum, the Museum of American History. The flowers are also out in full glory.

This museum holds not just historical items, but also culturally historic items. The kids were very engaged with a woman in costume from the 1890s on a bike.

Then we moved on to Julia Child’s kitchen, which Aunica was excited to remember from her co-op cooking class back home.

Then the Greensboro lunch counter. We missed Greensboro, so this was a nice surprise.

Dorothy’s slippers circa 1939.

Then we moved on to the patriotic items. We saw the flag that Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner to, the top hat Abraham Lincoln was wearing when he was assassinated, George Washington’s uniform, Thomas Jefferson’s lap desk, and some actual civil war uniforms, etc.

When the museum closed, we dropped off everyone except myself, Vanessa, Aunica and Erika and headed for the temple. They very kindly accommodated us, even though we were an hour late for our appointment to do baptisms. They had names for Vanessa and I to do also. It was a sweet experience to be able to do that with Aunica and our very good friends. Then the four of us went to a little cafe with an entire menu dedicated to gluten free items. Erika said it was the best pizza she ever had!

  1. Fun Fact: Did you know that the Washington D.C. temple has a 5th story that is an exact replica of the oval office. According to Mormon prophecy someday when the U.S. Constitution hangs by a thread, a Mormon will become President and sav the Constitution. His base of operations will be that Oval Office replica in the D.C. temple. Rather interesting.
