Birthday boy!
Deon likes to point out he was the last to have a birthday on the road, and today was it.
We started the day super early as we had agreed to getting on the 7am ferry since we parked in line. Even before the sun was up! It was a shivery morning! I packed up all the hot cocoa fixings and we headed upstairs to the observation deck. The only bummer was that the ocean was still pretty choppy, making Deon a bit queasy.
The plan for today was to drive the North Carolina outer banks, so we did. All the way from Ocracoke Island, where the ferry landed, to Kitty Hawk. This involved one more ferry halfway through.
We spent a few hours on a beach on Hatteras Island. It was so nice, felt just like home. The kids brought out the sleds and Dimitri played in the water. The weather was perfect.
We stopped at the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and the kids did a junior ranger program. Unfortunately, we were about 2 weeks early to take a hike to the top.
Deon’s birthday wouldn’t be complete without pizza, so we found ourselves at wise guys pizza. The white sauce was a bit bland, but the Hawaiian was great.
And, lastly, we found a cold stone creamery all the way up in Virginia. Happy birthday. I can’t say enough how much I love this man. How all my accomplishments in life were made possible through his support. Thanks for the ride, Deon! Looking forward to where this journey will take us.
At the end of the day, Deon said, “this was a full day. But a good one.” Yes, yes it was. It’s a good life.
