Last day in Florida: St Augustine

With mixed feelings we have come to our last day in Florida. We first entered Florida January 30th, so this is certainly a record for us! It has provided many friends, beautiful weather, and a break from the busyness. But we are ready to move on, see the last of what is in store for us this trip. Which feels like it’s coming to a quick end.

We spent the morning with Deon working and kids doing schoolwork so we could take the whole weekend off early. Then we drove into st Augustine, rig and all, which first looked to be a horrible mistake! But we found free oversized parking and set off to explore.

I really wanted to get to Castillo de San Marcos. It is one of the oldest buildings in the USA. St Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European city in the USA. It was founded by the spaniards, who reigned until the 7 years war turned it over to the British.

The kids ran all over the fort, watching a cannon demonstration, checking out the walls made of shells (called coquina), and doing their junior ranger books. It was beautiful (and crowded) and we stayed until closing time.

Then we walked the beautiful, narrow old downtown district. And, pizza. :)

The weather was absolutely perfect and not a mosquito to be seen. It was an idyllic night, and the perfect end to our Florida visit.
