Now entering NY, pull out your wallets

Today was a nice, easy Sunday. Around here was stake conference, and a huge stake, so far away. We opted to watch some more general conference instead. This campground also had a nice playground, laundry, showers, and a dump station, so we utilized all of that.

We didn’t have a long drive, but we didn’t leave until 3pm. I had scoped out a national park in Brooklyn we could stay at for $30/night, no hookups. We usually put in “avoid tolls” on our gps, but that wasn’t an option. So off we go.

First off, it was a harrowing drive to begin with. There are all kinds of restrictions on where you can’t drive an rv in NJ and NY, under penalty of a hefty ($1500) fine. We have never purchased a trucker gps, so I’m scrambling, trying to figure this out. Second, we cross the Goethals bridge and the attendant asks for $45! What?!? That’s a lot of cash to cross a bridge. We scrape together all the money we have, down to our last laundry quarters. Thankfully the next bridge is free.

We drive our big old rv through Brooklyn to our “campsite.” It’s a decommissioned airstrip. No upgrades, other than picnic tables, just a flat expanse of concrete. And, we also realize, a 2 hour trip into Central Park by public transit. We decide to stay, for now.
