Philadelphia-the short list

Yay, it’s Friday! Deon has been putting in a lot of hours, so he took today off to spend with us. We were in Philadelphia in 2006, so some of this was a repeat for us.

First of all, public transportation is the best. After a horrid time parking in DC (cheaper for our family, but a waste of many hours), we decided to do public transportation no matter the cost. And it ended up cheap! $30 for an unlimited day family pass. The ease of travel cemented in my mind that THIS is how we will see NYC.

We saw the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, had a ranger guided tour of independence hall, walked by Benjamin franklins grave, and saw the liberty bell. Watched a revolutionary war movie and got junior ranger badges.

Then we sprung for Philly cheesesteaks at a local joint, Sonnys. I thought they were really good, and the staff was so sweet with my kids.

Then the last stop of the day was Elfreths Street. This is the oldest continuously occupied residential street in the USA. And it was sooooo cute! It was engaging for all of us, from architecture to little museums, and even the alley cat bakery, run out of a residents home, where we bought and shared some amazing treats. Namely the best ginger cookie (and maybe the best cookie) I have EVER had.

  1. If you go through Missouri on your way back home, then you HAVE to stop at Lambert’s Cafe. It is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to! Huge portions of home style food along with pass around dishes and the BEST rolls you ever tried fresh from the oven still hot. You might want to make reservations in advance though because it is a very popular restaurant!

  2. Oh and did you know that the Liberty bell rang one last time on George Washington’s Birthday? It was already cracked but they rang it and the crack grew too large!!!
