Mackinac Island
This day didn’t really start off on the right foot. Jedi had run a fever the night before, but was up and ready to go the next morning, so we went for it.
We caught the Arnold ferry to Mackinac Island. Well, first we missed it, resulting in a major skirmish between Deon and I, caused by the culmination of all my stress triggers combined with all the little things about him that drive me crazy. And, to a large degree, a serious lack of sleep on my part. But we recovered in time for the next ferry. And the kids all got to drive the boat, which was cool.
The island is enchanting. No cars allowed, to which I remarked to Deon “one day in my life I don’t have to worry about my kids getting run over.” To which he replied “hit by a bike, trampled by a horse, drowned, but not hit by a car.” Optimism and pessimism at its best.
First up, a picnic in the park, courtesy of Deon’s quick thinking. Then a few houses to tour (courtesy of local Girl Scouts), and Fort Mackinac.
Then we took a beautiful walk through the interior of the island to arch rock. It was magical. Tons of carriages went by, and the kids loved to talk about all the colors of horses. This was probably my favorite part of the day.
Then we hauled the stroller and our little king down 207 steps to the shore trail.
Finished our night off with fudge, all-you-can-eat salad/pizza/ice cream, and a romp in the rain at the park. We took the 9pm ferry back (because apparently I can’t read schedules, but thankfully we made it bc it was the last one) and put this in the books as a wonderful day.
