Little Literary Laura
Like that alliteration?
We spent last night in a very nice city park with rv hookups and a wonderful playground for my kids this morning.
Then we headed over to the Laura ingalls wilder homestead. My girls have been looking forward to this the whole trip. It was well worth the wait. There were kittens to hold and calves to pet, horses to ride and carriages and wagons to drive. They washed laundry by hand, twisted rope and made corncob dolls. Saw replicas of the sod house, house on the prairie, and the schoolhouse, even attending “school” for the day. Aunica passed 8th grade by being able to list the 7 colors of the rainbow in order. It was a blast, and perfectly set up for families. The owners were so kind.
Then we drove into the small city of De Smet, and walked the Main Street to see the existing buildings and former sites of the locations in the book. Hard to wrap my brain around the fact that this was real. This was the street that Almanzo came sledding through, and the places where people searched (and hid) food during the long winter. And a thousand other moments that took place right here, that you felt like you lived through Laura’s words. What a truly amazing storyteller she was, and an amazing life she lived.
